4/5 Stars

Mike Hayes fought his way out of a brutal childhood and into a quiet, if lonely life, before he met Verity Metcalf. V taught him about love, and in return, Mike has dedicated his life to making her happy. He’s found the perfect home, the perfect job, he’s sculpted himself into the physical ideal V has always wanted. He knows they’ll be blissfully happy together.

It doesn’t matter that she hasn’t been returning his emails or phone calls.
It doesn’t matter that she says she’s marrying Angus.

It’s all just part of the secret game they used to play. If Mike watches V closely, he’ll see the signs. If he keeps track of her every move he’ll know just when to come to her rescue…

My Review

Our Kind of Cruelty is more or less a tragic love story. Mike loves V with everything he has. He buys her the perfect home, he’s got the perfect job, and he’s changed his body to appease her. He has no doubt they will live happily ever after even though he hasn’t heard from her for weeks until he receives an invitation to her wedding. Mike’s not worried though, it’s all part of their game.

I can honestly say, I got way more than I was expecting from this book. I could not put it down. With every page, I was trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Does she still him or doesn’t she? One moment you thought, “Mikes not crazy, this is just part of their game” and the next you would think, “no way she still loves him.” I enjoyed reading this book very much.

The author did a wonderful job with her writing. You could feel Mike’s emotions on every page. Like I said in the previous paragraph, V was harder to figure out but, she would have to be in order for there to be some mystery and suspense. Page after page, I was questioning her motives. The end of the book is where it really got me (but I won’t share that with you so I don’t ruin the story).

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good thriller.

Thank you, NetGalley and Farrar, Straus, and Giroux for an Advanced Copy of this book in return for an honest review.

teal thanks for reading
