Book Quotes | Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

Hey guys! This week’s book is Turtles All the Way Down by John Green. There were quite a few quotes from this book that I liked. This was such a good book, if you haven’t read it I highly recommend it. But, back to what you’re here for, here are my favorite quotes from Turtles All the Way Down:

“True fear isn’t being scared; it’s not having a choice in the matter.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

No truer statement has been said (or written, whatever).

“Our hearts were broken in the same places. That’s something like love, but maybe not quite the thing itself.”

— Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I thought this quote was cute, but also kind of deep at the same time.

“Maybe we invented metaphor as a response to pain. Maybe we needed to give shape to the opaque, deep-down pain that evades both sense and senses.”

— Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I thought this was a good quote about how we explain pain.

“ Admittedly, I have some anxiety problems, but I wouldn’t argue it irrational to be concerned about the fact that you are a skin-encased bacterial colony.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I find this quote both funny and true.

“Your now is not your forever.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I liked this quote because it’s both true, and hopeful.

“You’re right that self isn’t simple, Aza, maybe it’s not even singular. Self is a plurality, but pluralities can also be integrated, right? Think of a rainbow. It’s one arc of light, but seven differently colored arcs of light.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

This quote made me think, which is why I really liked it.

“Anybody can look at you. It’s quite rare to find someone who sees the same world you see.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I really liked this quote because it is hard to find someone, whether a friend or something more, that sees things the way you do and understands you.

“You’re both the fire and the water that extinguishes it. You’re the narrator, the protagonist, and the sidekick. You’re the storyteller and the story told. You are somebody’s something, but you are also your you.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

You have to write your own story, it’s as simple as that.

“The problem with happy endings is that they’re either not really happy, or not really endings, you know? In real life, some things get better and some things get worse. And then eventually you die.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

This is life, you know? I think I liked this quote because it’s true.

“The thing about a spiral is, if you follow it inward, it never actually ends. It just keeps tightening, infinitely.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I liked this quote because I think everyone can relate to it. It’s like when you can’t stop thinking about something and you have all these ‘what-ifs’ and you just keep thinking and thinking. The more you think, the more the spiral, spirals down.

“It’s a weird phrase in English, in love, like its a sea you drown in or a town you live in. You don’t get to be in anything else — in friendship or in anger or in hope. All you can be in is love.”

— Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I thought this was a great way to kind of express what love is like, or being in love rather.

“One of the problems with pain — physical or psychic — is that we can really only approach it through metaphor. It can’t be represented the way a table or body can. In some ways, pain is the opposite of language.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I really liked this quote because we can’t always explain why we’re hurting, mentally and physically, and when we try it’s hard for others to understand sometimes.

“I is the hardest word to define.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I don’t really know why I like this quote.

“The worst part of being truly alone is you think about all the times you wished that everyone would just leave you be. Then they do, and you are left being, and you turn out to be terrible company.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I think we can all relate to this at least at some point in our lives. You want to be left alone, but once you’re alone you find you don’t like it.

“Everyone wanted me to feed them that story — darkness to light, weakness to strength, broken to whole. I wanted it, too.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I liked this quote because people always want to hear stories about people who overcome things or stories of people who were beaten down and were able to rise again. Those people in those stories want the same thing, they just don’t always get it.

“And we’re such language-based creatures that to some extent we cannot know what we cannot name. And so we assume it isn’t real. We refer to it with catch-all terms, like crazy or chronic pain. The term chronic pain captures nothing of the grinding, constant, ceaseless, inescapable hurt. And the term crazy arrives at us with none of the terror and worry you live with.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

This goes back to that quote about trying to explain our pain. We can’t always explain it and when we try we use words like ‘crazy’ and ‘chronic pain’ which hardly describe what people are dealing with. I think I can relate to that on some level and that’s why I liked this quote.

“We always say we are beneath the stars. we aren’t, of course — there is no up or down, and anyway, the stars surround us. But we say we are beneath them, which is nice. So often English glorifies the human — we are whos, other animals are that — but English puts us beneath the stars at least.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

I just thought this was a beautiful quote.

“Life is a series of choices between wonders.”

Turtles All the Way Down, John Green

So true.

I had to leave one of my favorite quotes out because it kind of gives away the meaning of the title and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read the book. If you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend it!
