Book Quotes | Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham

Hey everybody! This week’s book is Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham. I have actually read this book twice, once just reading it and the second time as an audiobook, and I will probably reread it again sometime in the future. Lauren Graham is one of my most favorite actresses. Gilmore Girls has always been one of my most favorite shows ever. I also really liked her on Parenthood and other things she has been in, but back to the purpose of this post: here are a few of the quotes I liked from her memoir.

”But life doesn’t often spell things out for you or give you what you want exactly when you want it, otherwise it wouldn’t be called life, it would be called vending machine.”

Everybody wants instant gratification, but the world doesn’t work that way. You have to work for the things you want. The fact that she basically said the world isn’t a vending machine is what made me like this quote.

“What with your phone and the Xbox and the taxi TV and that music player you wear on your arm and the headphones that look like donuts on your cars, doesn’t make life so much smaller? If absolutely everything important is only happening on such a small screen, isn’t that a shame? Especially when the world is so overwhelmingly large and surprising? Are you missing too much? You can’t imagine it now, but you’ll look like me one day, even though you’ll feel just the same as you do now. You’ll catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and think how quickly it’s all gone, and wonder if all the time you used watching those families whose lives are filmed on the television, and making those cartoons of yourselves with panting dog tongues, and chasing after that terrible Pokémon fellow…well, will it feel like time well spent?

I really like this quote because she’s right. We all spent a little too much time on our phones, playing video games, or taking selfies than we do spending time with friends and family.

“It’s good to be bored in the car, I always tell him. Spend some time with just yourself and your thoughts and nothing to do. How else will you learn who you are?”

I had never thought about this before, but I think she has a point which is why I highlighted this quote.

“There’s more comedy in failure than in success, and it’s a much more universal language.”

I just liked this quote.

“To me, Lorelai was equal parts ‘Girl about Town’ and ‘The mom’ plus a magical mix of smarts and humor that made her totally unique.”

I have seen all the episodes of Gilmore Girls about a dozen times, so I completely agree with this statement.

“I know how lucky I am to have such wonderful first and second acts in my career. I’m still not sure what my third act will be (Sexy Baking Competition Hostess? Flamboyant Peruvian Bingo Caller?) but if you happen to run into Betty White, tell her thank you. I’d like to be her one day.”

I thought this was funny because Lauren Graham is a great actress and for her to wanting to aspire to be Betty White is awesome.

“I guess what I’m saying is, let’s keep lifting each other up. It’s not lost on me that of the biggest opportunities I’ve had to break into the next level were given to me by successful women in positions of power. If I’m ever in that position and you ask me, ‘Who?’ I’ll do my best to say, ‘You’ too. But in order to get there, you may have to break down the walls of whatever it is that’s holding you back first. Ignore the doubt — it’s not your friend — and just keep going, keep going, keep going.”

I liked this quote because it’s about lifting each other up, encouraging each other to follow our dreams.
