This week I picked An Abundance of Katherines by John Green as this week’s book. It’s been a minute since I have read this book, but I do remember liking it and the quotes I got from it. I’m a big John Green fan (shocker). He is such a great YA author. Anyway, here are some quotes from An Abundance of Katherines that I liked:

“It’s just that I learned a while ago that the best way to get people to like you is not to like them too much.”

An Abundance of Katherines, John Green

You have to be yourself around people and not try to force people to like you. If they don’t like you, that’s their loss (unless you’re a horrible person (; ).

“I am crying, he thought, opening his eyes to stare through the soapy, stinging water. I feel like crying, so I must be crying, but it’s impossible to tell because I’m underwater. But he wasn’t crying. Curiously, he felt too depressed to cry. Too hurt. It felt as if she’d taken the part of him that cried.”

An Abundance of Katherines, John Green

I don’t remember what was happening at this point in the book, but I’m sure most of us have felt so sad/depressed that you couldn’t even cry at some point.

“That’s who you really like. The people you can think out loud in front of.”

An Abundance of Katherines, John Green

Like I said before, be yourself. The best people to have by your side are the people you can be all of yourself with.

“What matters to you defines your mattering.”

An Abundance of Katherines, John Green

Whatever matters to you affects you. It’s as simple as that.

“Because you’re only thinking they-may-not-like-me, and guess what? When you act like that, no one likes you.”

An Abundance of Katherines, John Green

Could this be any more true? Yes, it’s hard to not care what other people think and to fit in sometimes, but you have to be yourself to the best of your ability and if they don’t like you, oh well.

”He liked the mere act of reading, the magic of turning scratches on a page into words inside his head.”

An Abundance of Katherines, John Green

Every book lover should be able to understand this and get why I liked this quote so much.

“If people could see me the way the way I see myself — if they could live in my memories — would anyone love me?”

An Abundance of Katherines, John Green

*heavy sigh* I know everyone has felt this at some point in their life, and I applaud those who have conquered this feeling. When we feel bad about ourselves or stay stuck in the past, we don’t love ourselves and feel like no one else will either. It’s hard and we all have our days, but we have to try to be better.

“Here’s to all the places we went. And all the places we’ll go. And here’s to me, whispering again and again and again and again: I love you.”

An Abundance of Katherines, John Green

I just liked this quote because it feels like closure, maybe?

“Books were the ultimate dumpees: put them down and they’ll wait for you forever; pay attention to them and they always love you back.”

An Abundance of Katherines, John Green

I honestly laugh every time I read this quote because I mean come on, it’s so true!
