Book Quotes | The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

I have picked The Fault in Our Stars by John Green for this week’s book. I’m sure many of you have read it or at least heard of it or seen the movie (cheaters). I just wanted to share some of my favorite quotes from the book that I thought you guys might like!

“My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

To me, this is just a deep way of saying that you can’t organize your thoughts although there are so many.

“There are infinite numbers between 0 and 1. There’s .1 and .12 and an infinite collection of others. Of course, there is a bigger infinite set of numbers between 0 and 2. or between 0 and a million. Some infinities are larger than other infinities. A writer we used to love taught us that. There are days, many of them when I resent the size of an unbound set. I want more numbers than I’m likely to get, and God, I wanted more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me forever within the number of days and I’m grateful.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

Hazel, the MC, says this as Augustus’s eulogy, and honestly, I can’t think of better words. You have to be careful and thankful for the time you have with the people you love, romantically or otherwise.

“I fell in love with the way you fell asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

This quote makes me sigh happily every time I read it.

“What a slut time is. She screws everybody.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

We never get as much time as want or need, and it’s the same for everyone and it sucks, therefore time is a slut.

“ The marks humans leave are too often scars.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

I liked this quote because I’m the type of person who doesn’t halfway do any kind of relationship, and when the people you care about and that you have let into your life leave, either by choice or otherwise, it leaves a scar.

“You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but you do get a say in who hurts you. I like my choices.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

Gus is the one who said this and he was talking to Hazel when he said it and it’s absolutely true. People are going to try to hurt you all the time, but it’s up to you whether or not you let them.

“Sometimes you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together again until all living humans read the book.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

I think most book lovers would agree that when you find an amazing book all you want to do is find someone else who has read it and there isn’t anyone you’re like, ‘I have to get everyone to read this. I need to talk about it.’

“The world is not a wish-granting factory.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

I don’t really think I need to elaborate on this one.

“I’m a grenade and at some point, I’m going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, okay.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

Hazel was sick and she knew that her life could probably end at any second and she didn’t want to add more people to the list that would morn her, but luckily Gus didn’t let her be like that.

“I’m in love with you and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

Oh, Gus. I love his character so much. He always says what he’s thinking. I think this quote is beautiful.

“Because you’re beautiful. I enjoy looking at beautiful people, and I decided a long time ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

Again, just Augustus saying what he’s thinking.

“There will come a time when all of us are dead. All of us. There will come a time when there are no human beings remaining to remember that anyone ever existed or that our species ever did anything. There will be no one left to remember. Aristotle or Cleopatra, let alone you. Everything we did and built and wrote and thought and discovered will be forgotten and all of this will have been for naught. Maybe that time is coming soon or maybe it is millions of years away, but even if we survive the collapse of our sun, we will not survive forever. There was a time before organisms experienced consciousness, and there will be a time after. And if the inevitability of human oblivion worries you, I encourage you to ignore it. God knows that’s what everyone else does.”

— The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

This is just a long, maybe a little morbid, way of saying you shouldn’t fear death it will come whether you’re ready for it or not.
